Why tolerance communication matters

Clear CNC machining tolerances help an overseas supplier quote correctly, choose a suitable process, and plan inspection before production begins. A drawing that identifies only nominal dimensions can create avoidable questions, cost changes, or inconsistent interpretation during manufacturing.

Separate critical features from general dimensions

Start by identifying dimensions that directly affect function: mating diameters, hole locations, thread engagement, flatness, sealing surfaces, and alignment features. Apply tolerances where function requires them instead of adding unnecessarily tight values across the entire part. This lets the manufacturer focus control and inspection effort on the features that matter most.

Use datums to show inspection intent

Datums provide a shared reference for manufacturing and measurement. When a component must mate with another part, a clear datum scheme reduces ambiguity about how positional or geometric requirements should be checked. Include the relevant GD&T callouts only when they are needed and ensure they match the functional intent of the assembly.

Specify material, finish, and threads

Dimensions alone do not define a machinable part. State the required material grade, heat treatment if applicable, surface finish, coating or anodizing requirements, and thread standards. If a cosmetic surface requires protection, include that requirement in the drawing or purchase order.

Make inspection requirements practical

Ask for inspection records that match the project risk. A first article or dimensional report may be useful for critical parts, while lower-risk repeat components may need a simpler agreed inspection plan. Confirm the format, measurement units, and acceptance criteria before production.

Include a complete RFQ package

For the best response from a CNC supplier, send the latest revision-controlled drawing, CAD model, material and finish requirements, expected quantity, and delivery destination. A complete package enables faster manufacturability feedback and a more reliable quotation.
