What Is the Sensor?
A sensor, also known as a measuring element or transducer, is a device designed to detect a specific measurement and convert it into an output signal that can be processed according to a defined set of parameters.
A typical sensor consists of three main components: a sensitive element, a conversion element, and a basic conversion circuit.
A sensor is a physical device or organic element capable of detecting and sensing external signals, chemical compositions (such as smoke), and physical factors (such as light, heat, or humidity). It then transmits the collected data to other devices or systems. Sensors fulfill the needs for information transfer, control, storage, display, recording, and processing, making them the key starting point for implementing automatic detection and control systems.
The Function of the Sensor
Sensors are often compared to the five human senses: hearing for sound-sensitive sensors, vision for photosensitive sensors, taste for chemical sensors, touch for pressure-sensitive or temperature-sensitive sensors, and smell for air sensors.
Sensitive components in sensors are classified into three main types:
- Physics-based sensors, which rely on physical effects like sound, force, heat, light, magnetism, and electricity.
- Chemistry-based sensors, which operate based on chemical reactions.
- Biology-based sensors, which work through molecular recognition mechanisms such as hormones, enzymes, or antibodies.
Sensors can be categorized into ten primary types based on their main sensing functions: Radiation sensors, Color sensors, Thermal elements, Photosensitive elements, Gas sensors, Force sensors, Magnetic sensors, Humidity sensors, Taste sensors, Acoustic sensors.
